Before me lies an oaken door,
An ageless portal for old souls
When I can strive for life no more
And Hades comes to take his toll
I wonder if the angels dear
Will sally forth with heaven’s cheer
To thwart the evil mass
And let my aching spirit pass
Beneath the threshold quick and fast
To join once more its ancient past
Although my eyes no longer see
I sense the veil drawn close to me
As yet there are no angels fair
To guide me from this fearful lair
Perhaps my sins, too great to bear
Have caused the heavens to despair
Fearful that my soul may dare
To trespass on God’s sacred care
Implored the Lord to bar my way
And hold his soldiers hard at bay
The light is fading, the end is nigh
My spirit fails, my heart expires
Yet only Satan sits by me
His clinging hand upon my knee
But wait, I hear a distant cry
The sound of trumpets in the sky
Behold, a light through darkness breaks
The devil flees and in his place
A young man takes me by the hand
My escort to the promised land.
